My Montana friends all offer similar advice regarding bears while hiking:
1. Stay in groups of at least 4, and 6 is better.
2. Stay close together. Don’t get spread out!
3. Make a lot of noise.
4. Each person should have bear spray. But none of my friends want to get close enough to have to use the spray. We (or Dad) might try to buy a quantity of cans.
5. Hike on trails that are heavily utilized
